Pest control tips for businesses

Pests can be an issue for all businesses.

Cornwall Council does not provide a pest control service, so our team have put together some tips below to help you in relation to this area.

Top tips for pest control

  1. Seal it Tight
Block any entry points. Fill gaps, cracks, and holes with a durable and rodent proof material to prevent pest ingress.
  2. Clean and Tidy
Regularly sweep, mop, and declutter to make your premises less appealing to pests and to enable you to more easily see if there is pest activity on site.
  3. Smart storage
Keep food and supplies sealed in airtight containers, particularly after packs have been opened.
  4. Cutting back undergrowth
Keep all undergrowth around your premises tidy to prevent pests nesting in overgrown areas.
  5. Protective screens
Install screens on doors and windows, and mesh covers on vents.
  6. Staff training
Train your team to spot signs of pest activity and report them immediately.
  7. Pest control services
Partner with a pest control service for regular checks and treatments and ensure that you follow and action their advice and instructions.
  8. Waste food
Keep outdoor rubbish bins well away from the building. Clean and empty them regularly.

What are the risks of failing to get pests under control?

The points below highlight some of the dangers and risks of failing to control pest activity on your premises:

  1. Food Safety and Health & Safety
Pests can carry diseases and contaminate your food, which can put your customers' health at risk.
  2. Reputation
Seeing pest activity on site or reading a report about it in the media can harm the reputation of your business.
  3. Compliance
You must ensure that strict pest control measures are in place to ensure food safety requirements are met.
  4. Food Quality
Pests can contaminate food, leading to wasted food and potential health hazards. Keep your ingredients and dishes safe.
