Work is well underway on a development of 55 affordable homes in Padstow which Cornwall Council has bought as part of efforts to tackle the housing crisis.

The homes were designed and are being delivered by Poltair Homes on the Trecerus Farm development in Padstow. The new homes will be open to people with a local connection to the area.
The development includes:
- 28 social rented flats, bungalows and houses. These properties will range from one to four bedrooms.
- 27 family-sized shared ownership houses of two and three bedrooms.
- Areas of public open space and a cycle path.
The homes will be energy efficient, supporting the Council’s climate change emergency by providing sustainable housing. Each property will be built ready for electric vehicle charging points to be installed for individual cars, and will be heated by low carbon air source heat pumps.
It is expected that the first homes will be available in summer 2022 with the remainder coming forward in summer 2023.
Olly Monk, Cornwall Council cabinet member for housing and planning, said: “There is a clear demand for housing in Padstow – there are currently around 140 households on our Homechoice register looking for affordable homes to rent.
“Cornwall needs more homes – both to rent and to buy – and we want to provide a range of homes to improve choice for local residents and to meet their housing needs.
“Our priority is to provide homes for local residents and this development provides a great opportunity to unlock a highly sustainable site in an area where there is high demand.”
Andy Ley Design Director at Poltair Homes, said: “We are delighted to have secured these homes for Cornwall and to be working with Cornwall Council. We are very much looking forward to seeing the homes finished and occupied. We set out to create an attractive environment and overall development from the outset and we spent many hours in the design process to ensure we fulfilled the objective. Our company ethos is ‘Led By Design’ which as a team requires us to focus our efforts on good design and not just produce boxes, ultimately designing homes that people will love."
Eligibility criteria will apply to all the homes to ensure the properties are offered to households who can demonstrate a local connection.
When available, both rent and shared ownership properties will be advertised on Cornwall Housing’s website. For shared ownership enquiries please contact sharedownershipsales@cornwallhousing.org.uk
In June 2021 the Council announced its plans to tackle both the immediate issues around housing and the longer-term problems.
A range of initiatives are already in action, from the provision of more emergency accommodation at New County Hall in Truro and emergency accommodation at Rosewarne Car Park in Camborne, to the purchase and refurbishment of disused properties around Cornwall, development of a landmark modular homes scheme near Pool and a significant ramp-up of the new ‘council housing’ programme, including 130 homes at West Carclaze Garden Village near St Austell. And last month the Council entered into a landmark deal to provide permanent self- contained ‘micro homes’.
