Who Dares Serves team showcase skills at passing out parade

A team who were put through their paces while being given a unique insight into life on the front line with Cornwall’s emergency services showcased their new skills at an official passing out parade.

Who Dares Serves is a week-long, multi-agency course giving people insight into what it’s like to work for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, as well as other public services from across the South West.

Who Dares Serves is a one of a range of innovative work-related options within the Who Dares Works project, funded by the European Social Fund, The National Lottery Community Fund and led by award-winning Community Interest Company, Active Plus.

The team at the passing out Parade

The official passing out parade, which took place at St Ives Community Fire Station, marks the culmination of the group’s learning over the five days. During the ceremony, held in front of family and friends, the group showcased techniques they learnt throughout the week, including hose running and first aid.

One of the participants said: “I feel more confident working as a team. I feel excited and confident about myself and my abilities.” Another added: “It seems scary at first but taking the first step and walking through the fire station door leads to an unforgettable experience with brilliant instructors and a great team you develop with along the way.”

Who Dares Serves is led by Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service which has been running the Phoenix Project since 2002 to enhance self-confidence, communication skills and community spirit.

Chief Fire Officer Kathryn Billing said: “Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is committed to working with local communities developing skills. Our incredible course staff are supportive, inspiring and passionate about what we do. They naturally create an inclusive learning environment for course attendees to realise their potential and ambitions. The participants on this course have worked extremely hard throughout this week to succeed and be the best they can be. Once again, we have been very proud to work together with our partners at Active Plus.”
