Cornwall Council has become the first local authority in the UK to be awarded Fertility Friendly accreditation.

The acknowledgement follows a period of developing extensive fertility support, including guidance for employees and managers, regular fertility cafés, and manager training.

These include:

  • Unlimited time off to employees going through fertility challenges
  • Quarterly Fertility Cafes offered to employees seeking support and advice
  • Practical support in the workplace such as providing a fridge to store IVF medication, if required

Natalie Silverman, co-founder of Fertility Matters at Work, comments: “We’re really proud to be working with a range of organisations dedicated to supporting their employees through ensuring appropriate policy and guidance is in place, and this is being supported by awareness-raising and education.

“It’s incredibly positive that government bodies are now recognising the importance of becoming Fertility Friendly. With Cornwall Council being the first local authority in the UK to become accredited, we hope to see others following in their footsteps.”

Cllr Linda Taylor, leader of Cornwall Council, said: “I am so proud that we have become the first local authority in the UK to be awarded Fertility Friendly accreditation, and I hope that by having well-publicised fertility-focused policies and a range of other support for staff experiencing fertility concerns, people will get the treatment they need when they need it.

“The evidence is very clear that fertility declines with age, and treating fertility issues as early as possible is more likely to result in successful outcomes. Employees should never feel that they have to choose between undergoing treatment and what might be convenient for their jobs/employers.

“We also hope that having Fertility Friendly processes in place means that employees feel well supported to stay in work; reducing sickness leave, and ultimately helping retain staff - our most valuable asset.

“Last but not least, we hope that by having Fertility Friendly policies and being accredited as a Fertility Friendly employer, we’re attractive to people looking at our vacancies. Being Fertility Friendly sends a clear message that Cornwall Council is committed to supporting you if you need fertility treatment.”
