Introduction
Cornwall has an outstanding coastline and countryside of national and international renowned importance. Access to this resource is an essential part of the lives of the people who live here. It provides cultural connection and an enormous sense of health and well-being. It is a largely free, recreational resource. It is also recognised as one of Cornwall's most important tourism assets. Attracting visitors to the county, providing economic benefits through underpinning jobs and investment.
The Cornwall Countryside Access Strategy is a 10 year document. Which will be continually reviewed and updated. It is the first strategic plan that Cornwall has had for management and development of coast and countryside access.
It incorporates the Council's statutory requirement to produce a Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP). Including all aspects of countryside access in Cornwall. It considers the effect of environmental and heritage agendas on countryside and coastal access. Thus having a broader scope than the statutory requirement.
The process for the strategies production involved a wide ranging consultation on a draft strategy. Cornwall Countryside Access Forum (CCAF) advised on countryside access for the final document.
An Initial Network Assessment (revised November 2005) provided a strategy consultation baseline. The consultation results are available in Consultation Reports.
