HMICFRS Inspection Programme 2018

In July 2017, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary’s (HMIC) extended its remit. This would now include inspections of England’s fire and rescue service. This was as part of its fire reform agenda. It changed its name to Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary’s and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS).

What is an HMICFRS inspection?

HMICFRS assesses and inspects fire and rescue services across England. This is to report on their efficiency, effectiveness and people (leadership).

The inspection focuses on:

  • How effective each service is at preventing, protecting against and responding to fire and other risks
  • Whether the service provides value for money
  • How well the service looks after its people and ensures fairness and diversity

HMICFRS assess and report on the efficiency, effectiveness and leadership of all 45 fire and rescue services in England. This included Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service. We were one of the first to be inspected in July 2018. The results were published on 20 December 2018.
