Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service's role in road traffic collisions (RTC)
Assisting at the scene of an RTC is a major part of our work as a Fire and Rescue Service.
Our firefighters are trained for rescue and extrication as much as they are for tackling fires. Using team work and state of the art rescue equipment, firefighters are able to release casualties from vehicles after a crash.
It can be a frightening experience being trapped inside a wreckage and we will always do our best to minimise the trauma. If we have to resort to dismantle your vehicle, it is usually too late to save it from the scrap heap - but at least you are safe!
It takes a great deal of time and care to rescue people from wreckages. While we rescue trapped passengers, lanes and roads need to be closed and so delays can occur. An extrication cannot be rushed but we will carry out the rescue as quickly and as safely as possible.
Cornwall's vehicle extrication and trauma team
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service have their very own Vehicle Extrication Team. We compete in regional, national and international competitions.
Cornwall's team is made up of firefighter’s and junior officers from all over the county. The extrication team use their collective learning experiences to introduce the latest techniques and methods to ensure the safe and efficient extrication of a casualty. They reinforce the learning and development of first aid through realistic training simulations.
We are always looking for corporate sponsorship to help with long-term fundraising and welcome any support. Please contact us if you can help.
