The Community Safety Award badges and certificates

Find out what each badge is about below and what the requirements are to complete the activities to gain the award.

There is no requirement to register to take part in the award scheme, all of the materials and resources are available from this site.

The badges and certificates

The Community Safety Home Award is aimed at 5-10 year olds. Activities can be undertaken either at home or in the meeting place.

Upon completion of the award, the individual will be able to demonstrate how they can be prepared at home and react to emergencies.

How it works

There are 9 activities; the first two are compulsory and you must complete another 4 to gain the Award. Activities can be undertaken either at home or in the meeting place.

Requirements to gain the Home Award

Think what you might need in a household grab bag, do you have pets, what they would need.
Draw a map of an escape route from your home/meeting place.
If the danger is outside, what would you do? If the danger was inside, what would you do?
Visit or find out about a Power station / fuel depot or flood defence scheme or any other place that is similar and has managed hazards.
Find out if your house/meeting place lies within the flood plain, who would you need to contact, or how would you find this information, are there any other risks associated with where you live/meet.
What would you consider to be an emergency?
Who might be involved in an emergency; list the different agencies that might be involved depending on the incident.
What would you need to do to make your home secure if you were being evacuated.
Who near you, or in your community may need your assistance during an incident. Name 3 categories of people.

The Community Safety Neighbourhood Award is aimed at 10-14 year olds. Activities can be undertaken either at home or in the meeting place. Each activity has a page consisting of information on safety relating to the activity and a task to perform.

Upon completion of the award, the individual will be able to demonstrate how they can assist within communities, such as checking on neighbours and vulnerable people and delivering information.

How it works:

There are 15 activities (examples below). The first 3 are compulsory and you must complete another 5 to gain the award. Activities can be undertaken either at home or in the meeting place.

Gain the Neighbourhood Award

Compulsory:

Produce a complete house hold grab bag, including relevant copies of documents which might be needed. What supplies would you prepare i.e. if you were stranded due to snow, flood or in a heat wave.
Put together a list of all your local radio stations with their relevant frequencies. Complete a list of useful phone numbers. Have you and/or your parents/guardians got an In Case of Emergency (ICE) in your/their mobile phone.
Write a generic home/meeting place emergency plan; including escape routes, hazards and how you would overcome them. Incorporate in your plan what additional actions you would take if you had pets.

Select 5 activities below to complete the award:

Highlight how many vulnerable people live close to your home/meeting place.
What is an emergency, who would you contact and how for different types of emergencies.
Visit or identify a major hazard site near your home/meeting place i.e. gas pipe lines, overhead power cables, Military sites, Ports/harbours, flood areas (or any other site agreed with you peer group).
What practicable steps could you take to minimise viral disease spread i.e. Flu or animal disease. (Pick one of the two)
What practicable steps could you take within your community to assist vulnerable people if your community was cut off by snow, flood, long term power cut or any other incident agreed by your peer group.
What are the visible signs of coastal pollution, name a few recent incidents. Which service would you notify when dialling 999 or 112.
Name three events when you would, and explain what is meant by “Go in, Stay in and Tune in” (Log On). Name two events when you would, and explain what is meant by, “Get out and Stay out and dial 999 or 112″.
What measures would you take to minimise a potential hazard risk within your home/meeting place.
Visit an industry or organisation that has their own emergency plan, get them to talk about what considerations they had to take into account to formulate their plan i.e., Police, local authority, Fire Brigade, Ambulance Service, Environment Agency, Highways Agency, event organisers, harbours/ports or any other place agreed by your peer group.

The Community Safety Award is aimed at 14-18 year olds

How it works

There are 5 activities; all 5 are compulsory to gain the Community Safety Award. Activities can be undertaken either at home or in the group.

Gain the Community Award

Complete a 10 minute presentation of what should be included within a house hold grab bag with an explanation of why (within your group or to another section/Uniformed Youth Organisation).
Understand and explain why a house and its occupants should have an emergency plan, where it should be kept and what should be in it.
Produce a leaflet/handout on what to do in an emergency (you may pick any emergency, ie snow, flood, heat wave or disease).
Find out about an International Agency based in the UK that is involved in Disaster Relief, have a discussion within your group about the work they do. Relay the findings from this discussion to another section, at the appropriate level for that section.
- Disease, there are two types for you to look into; Human and Animal. What control measures would you implement to minimise the spread of human diseases.
- Name three events that have affected the British economy due to Animal Diseases. What were they, how were they spread and controlled and what the impact on the economy was?
