Thanckes Oil Fuel Depot


Thanckes Oil Fuel Depot is operated by the Oil and Pipelines Agency. The site is on a peninsular of 97 acres on the west bank of the Hamoaze, just north of Torpoint, Cornwall. It holds up to 138,000 cubic metres of high flashpoint fuel for HM ships and other customers. Thanckes Oil Fuel Depot was previously designated a Major Accident Control Regulations site. Since 2012 it has been a site regulated by the Control of Major Accident Hazard Regulations 1999 (COMAH).

There are internal and external emergency response plans for the Oil Fuel Depot. This is required by the regulations mentioned above.  Cornwall Council's Emergency Management Team are responsible for the external emergency plan. The site operators having responsibility for the on-site emergency plan. The aim of both plans is to provide set procedures for dealing with any major accidents that might occur at the Depot. This could include fire or oil pollution. As required, the plans deal with both incidents on the site and externally.
