Are you vulnerable in your home?
Over 80% of all casualties occur as a result of fires in the home. The majority of these fires are accidental and could have been prevented by following a few simple measures which help to reduce the risks.
Our aim is to help you protect your home from fire and explain the importance of fire safety. Some people are more vulnerable and at greater risk of having a fire in their home than others. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) have limited resources and where possible will give priority to carrying our free home fire safety checks in the homes of those that need it the most.
Vulnerable groups at greater risk include:
- elderly people
- people who live alone
- people with a disability or limiting condition
- mental health
- lone parents
- smokers

Do you live in rented accommodation?
If you live in rented accommodation, your landlord is legally responsible to provide adequate smoke and carbon monoxide detection.
Can you help yourself?
CFRS want everyone to be safe in their home. If you are not in our target group, we still want to help you.
You can help us to decide what would be best for you by completing one of the following options:
- View the leaflet Fire safety in the home leaflet. Use the home fire safety checklist to see if you have reduced or eliminated the hazards in your home and check to make sure your family understand what they should do in the event of fire.
- If you are a care provider or sheltered housing scheme manager, complete the person-centred fire risk assessment.
- Call us if you need further advice - freephone telephone on 0800 3581 999.
- Request a free home fire safety check using our online request form and provide as much extra information as possible.
- Find out what else you can do to prevent a fire in your home by having working smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detection and knowing your escape plan.
