Cornwall Council operates Short Breaks and Residential Services across the County. Referrals to these homes are presented by the Social Worker to the Short Breaks Panel. The Panel meets monthly. Crisis placements should be referred to the Area Team Manager in the first instance. They will then discuss them with:
- the Service Manager for Short Breaks
and - Residential Services.
The Service Manager for Short Breaks and Residential Services is Sharron Adams.
Each home has an (Ofsted registered) Home Manager and is regularly inspected. There is a clear referral process to ensure each placement meets the disabled child or young person’s individual needs.

Short Break Statement
Cornwall's short break statement is for families living in Cornwall who have a disabled child or young person aged 0-18 years. It sets out Cornwall Council’s vision of short break services. It also simply states who can access a short break and how. For some short breaks we may need to assess your child and family. This is to ensure that we can provide the right level of support and short break services. Information about short break opportunities can be found in:
Reports for each home can be found on the Ofsted website. You will need to enter the Unique Reference Number (URN) for the home.
The Short Breaks Service provides planned residential short breaks. These are for children and young people with learning disabilities and associated complex needs.
We help parents/carers to have a break from their caring responsibilities. This also helps children and young people to enjoy some independence with their peers away from their families.
The aims of the short breaks homes are;
- to provide a positive experience for each individual
- to offer each child or young person the opportunity to join in a variety of fun activities
- to promote social inclusion and positive outcomes for disabled children and young people
The resources include:
- Number One Children’s Home (URN - SC040491)
- Poppins Children’s Home (URN - SC040132)
- Tresor Children’s Home (URN - SC361789)
- Miller’s Nook Children’s Home (URN – 2633410)
