Glossary of Terms (what all the words mean!)
Article
An article is a specific clause in an agreement or legal document. An article outlines a single rule or regulation.
Convention
This is a special type of treaty or agreement between many countries. Countries come together to discuss a global issue. They then agree the procedures and actions they will all follow.
Child
Under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, this is defined as person under 18 years of age.
Duty Bearer
A duty bearer can be an individual or organisation. They have responsibility to respect, promote and fulfil children’s rights.
Ratify
This is when governments and other organisations officially approve an agreement.
Right
A right is a moral or legal entitlement to have or do something.
State
A state is a country, its government and the institutions that run the country. Institutions include, for example, the health service, police and local councils.
Treaty
A treaty is an agreement to solve an issue that affects the parties signing the treaty.
UNCRC
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child covers all aspects of a child’s life. It sets out the rights that all children everywhere are entitled to. It explains how adults and governments must work together to make sure children can enjoy their rights.
