Gyllyngdune Gardens Restoration Project
Gyllyngdune Gardens, Princess Pavilion, Falmouth received a £2.3m funding package to refurbish the gardens and part of the Pavilion. Almost £1m was awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). With the balance from Cornwall Council and Carrick Leisure Ltd.
The proposals for the site are wide ranging. They are designed to enhance the environmental quality of the area. As well as attract a wider audience base and preserve the conservation features of the site. Such as the quarry garden and historic shell grotto.
The aspiration is to make Gyllyngdune Gardens an inspirational, innovative and accessible place to visit. It will be a public place to relax, play, learn, exercise, enjoy art, theatre, music and performance. You can experience the garden's heritage which is rich in people, places and plants.
"Public parks were once the pride and joy of our towns and cities. We want our funding to help them regain their place at the heart of thriving local communities. Transforming the way people think about themselves, their identity and their heritage." - HLF
Play area
In the heart of the Gardens is a natural play area. This has been created to increase the numbers of parents and children using the site. This marks phase one of the overall restoration project. The play scheme was created through Cornwall Council's Pathfinder project. Designed using bespoke features created from natural materials and using local crafts people. Children from four Falmouth primary schools joined Cornwall Council's landscape design team to design the play area. Based on Morgawr - Falmouth's mythical sea creature.
The play area is now officially open. Marking the start of a summer programme of holiday activities and events in the Gardens for children and families.
Gyllyngdune Gardens takes part in the annual Love Parks Week. Hundreds of people take part in activities, such as historical walking tours, to theatre on the bandstand.
