Apply for us to review your household's rubbish limit

The new service will limit the amount of rubbish most households can put out for collection to what fits in your bin or sack with the lid closed.

That's 180 litres fortnightly, or roughly 3 to 4 black bags.

We’re giving all households in Cornwall a 180 litre wheelie bin or 180 litre reusable protective sack to put their rubbish out in for collection once the new service starts. This will make it easy for you and our collection crews to be sure that you're meeting the new fortnightly 180 litre limit.

If you’re recycling all you can this should be enough for most households.  At the moment the average black bin bag in Cornwall is made up of:

  • 22% material that should have been recycled using the current collection service
  • 35% is food waste that will be recyclable thanks to the new service and
  • only 43% is actually rubbish that couldn't have been reused or recycled

A grapic of a black rubbish sack and the words: The average kitchen bin in Cornwall is currently 22% material that should have been recycled, 35% food that should have been eaten and only 43% is actually rubbish that can't be reused or recycled.

Who's eligible for an extra bin or sack?

We will give some households an extra rubbish bin or sack on application under certain exceptional circumstances including:

  • the number of people aged over 3 years
  • the number of children aged under 3 years
  • the number of people who produce non-infectious clinical waste

Please note: you'll only be able to apply for an extra rubbish container on this page once the roll out programme has reached your area and your new bins have been delivered.

Before you apply you must make sure you're recycling all you can

Recycling all you can including your food waste will free up space in your bin for your rubbish.

Household rubbish only

Only put out household rubbish for collection. If you run a small business from home it’s illegal to use the household service to dispose of the waste generated.

The law classes it as commercial waste and says you must pay a licensed collector to dispose of it.

This law applies to waste generated by a home - or part of a home - rented out as holiday accommodation for some or all of the year.

Please note:

  • If you qualify, we’ll only give you an extra rubbish bin or sack on a temporary basis for as long as your circumstances reasonably call for one
  • You must tell us if your circumstances change
  • We may check your household circumstances at any time
  • If we find the information you’ve given us in your application is incorrect, we'll take back the extra bin or sack
  • If you begin this form but don’t submit it, the information will be deleted after 30 days
  • We aim to reply within 10 working days, at busy times it may take longer
