Apply for an older or disabled person's bus pass


It's quicker to apply for your bus pass online. If you are unable to apply online, some libraries are available to assist with your application. Alternatively, call us on 0300 1234 222 and we will send a postal application form to your address.

If you have reached female pension age or claim your state pension you can apply for a bus pass.

The most effective way to apply for a bus pass is online.  Alternatively, there are other ways to apply.

Before you start your application you must have the following information:

  • Evidence of address
  • Evidence of age 
  • National Insurance Number
  • Valid email address
  • Head and Shoulders photograph of good quality. Due to copyright we are unable to take copies of photographs from official documents such as Driving Licences or Passports.  However, we do accept photographs from mobile devices known as 'Selfies'

What evidence do I need to provide?

When applying for a pass you will need to show evidence of your address and provide evidence of your disability or age. Please do not send original documents as we cannot guarantee being able to return them.

Evidence of address

Please provide one of the following:

  • Bank statement
  • NHS medical card
  • Benefit book / letter
  • Council tax bill
  • Photo driving licence
  • Optical / medical prescription counterfoil
  • Utility bill

Evidence of disability or age

To prove you are eligible for a bus pass, it is important to provide up to date evidence.  This must relate to the category under which you are applying.  All evidence must be less than 12 months old.

Before you start your application, it is important that you look at our Eligible Categories page.  You can also download the Eligibility criteria for bus pass document.

Please make sure that you have included all the evidence with your application, failure to do this can delay the application process.

Please note that we do not accept ESA documents other than for proof of address.

My application was returned - what do I do?

We may contact you about your application either by email or post if extra information is needed. We will tell you what extra information is required.

If you are unable to provide the required evidence, you can call us on 0300 1234 222 for advice. You can also request evidence from your Doctor or medical professional via a letter.  You can also ask them to complete page 2 of the application form for you.

Please note that some surgeries may charge a fee for this service.

You can re-apply at any time. Please remember to submit all your documents and your photograph again. Including any new evidence you wish to submit.
