Bus stop features

Most traffic engineering schemes and bus infrastructure improvements are made up of several features. Whilst this page gives guidance costs for measures you should bear in mind that all sites are unique and will require different levels of work.

Bus boarder

Bus Boarder

A bus boarder is a location where the footway is extended into the carriageway. Often beyond the width of a parked vehicle to facilitate bus operations. They can be provided with or without a Low Floor Bus Kerb. However Bus Boarders may have an adverse effect on existing parking. Cost from £4,200.

Low floor bus kerb

Low Floor Bus Kerb

A low floor bus kerb enables the footways to be raised to allow access to buses without a step. They can be provided with or without a Bus Boarder. However low floor bus kerbs may impinge on existing parking. Unless the kerbside is kept clear for buses they are counter productive. Cost from £2,800.

Bus bay

Bus Bay

Bus bays allow buses to pull off the main carriageway.  They can help to minimise traffic disruption to the road network. Many are often provided on higher speed roads under clearway control.

A common problem is that bus bays can attract parking, preventing buses from reaching the kerbside.  This forces buses to stop in the carriageway, sometime illegally, interrupting traffic flow. It is recommended to accompany a bus bay with the appropriate parking controls.  For example a Bus Stop Clearway, so they can be properly used. Cost from £18,750.

Bus stop clearway and bus stand

Bus Stop Clearway and Stand

Where kerbside parking and loading hinder a buses access to a bus stop, a bus stop clearway can be used. This has clearly marked bus stop markings with strict parking restrictions being provided. These normally automatically operate on a 24 hours basis, but can be operated on a time period. Cost from £600.

Bus stand clearways operate where a bus is expected to wait longer than the period necessary to set down and pick up passengers. These generally operate on a 24 hour basis, but can operate on a time period. Cost from £600.

Bus shelters

The installation of a bus shelter can provide passenger comfort and convenience prior to boarding a bus. Suitable designs, reflecting local community needs and identified design constraints are taken forward. For example sympathetic to historical and environmental landscape.  More bespoke shelters can be provided for example to encourage multi-modal travel, but at greater cost.

A shelter can only be provided where current and future passenger numbers are identified. Cost from £7,000

Bus stop flag and timetable case

Flag and Timetable Case

A bus stop flag (including the pole) and Timetable Case will display bus operator and service timetable, along with contact details. They should be provided in a position that can be viewed by passengers at the stop, whilst not impeding pedestrian flows.  They should also not obstruct passengers waiting to board or alight from a bus. Cost from £300.
